Alex's Story

BEFORE

Alex's original kitchen was a very standard layout with a large corner pantry and oven tower and although it was part of an open plan kitchen/ dining area the raised bench to the front of the kitchen closed it off and made it feel small and crammed in the corner.

We completely removed the kitchen and existing tiles, then we re-tiled throughout the open plan kitchen/ dining area to help tie them together. We then fitted a new modern style kitchen with white gloss finish to the cabinets to lift and brighten the area, we fitted as many drawers and pullouts as we could within the kitchen area to make the kitchen as functional and usable as possible and the inclusion of cabinets opening into the dining area created much needed storage space within this room.

Finished off with a contrasting Quantum Quartz benchtop the final result was a bright modern airy space which became not just a kitchen but a feature part of the overall open plan area.

Cate's Story

BEFORE

Cate's apartment in Kingscliff had a compact kitchen completely hidden in the corner of the lounge / dining area, the view to and from the kitchen was completely obscured by a full height wall and return which made it impossible for anyone in the kitchen to see or interact with anyone else.

With this unit primarily being used as a family holiday home Cate wanted a much more open and attractive space where everyone was in eyesight and earshot of everyone else regardless of whether chores had to be done or who's turn it was to cook !

DURING

There were a few challenges with this project not least of which was that it was on the 1st Floor of a 3 Floor block set back some 100m from the road with no on-site parking or lift, needless to say we didn't have to visit the gym when we knocked off at the end of the day !

When we removed the internal walls we found that the plumbing for the hot water service was run within the wall and also the switching for all the lighting in the kitchen/ lounge and dining areas were also contained within this wall.

With the floor slab, walls and ceiling all being a precast concrete construction this created problems for the re-siting of these services.

Our solution for the hot water service was to chase the pipework into the floor slab and then run around the perimeter walls to the correct positions for the new layout.

With the existing switching and electrical cabling we decided to create an overhead bulkhead which had a dual purpose, it allowed us to conceal the exposed cabling whilst creating a feature above the new island breakfast bar with additional lighting to not only light the benchtop but give additional ambient lighting to the new open plan area.

With the services taken care of we then turned our attention to the final kitchen layout and finishes.

Cate wanted a comfortable, open, informal area with a bit of a beachy feel where the family could sit and chat while a meal was being prepared.

To this end we created an island breakfast bar with seating to the outside and large drawers inside the kitchen to make the best use of the limited space available.

We cut back the existing carpet to help define the area and fitted new vinyl plank flooring to provide a durable, easy to clean surface to cope with the water and sand after a hard days surfing !

The choice of smartstone engineered stone tops with grey subway tiled splashbacks transitions well from the new vinyl plank flooring to the white high gloss finish of the new cabinetry and gives that informal beachy feel whilst still lifting and brightening the area.
